The PeaceWorks Project

Like millions around the world I was heartbroken by the events at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut. The PeaceWorks Project is my response to President Obama's call for meaningful action. A PeaceWork is a piece of public sculpture designed to encourage gun awareness. I choose to leave the politics of gun control out of the mix. I simply want to stimulate thought. Because the Project is going to be long and complicated, I'm using the blog format to tell the story.

Good News

If you read enough how-to-be-a-salesman books, one of the persistant themes is that a "no" is just a "yes" waiting to happen. Or something like that.

So good news: I just received my first no from the City of Troy. The rational for the denial stemmed from "laws regulating the disposal of confiscated weapons, none of which allows for destruction" in the manner I'm suggesting. That said, the letter had an extremely gracious tone and left me feeling pretty good. After all, who really thought this would be easy?

Plus, the PeaceWorks Project just received its first named members of the Role of Donors. Earl and Lori Hoellen of Denver, CO.

Who I Am

My name is Geoffrey Raymond. I'm a "public" artist.

For the past seven years I've used my painting to shine a light on the American financial crisis. This has typically involved painting the titans of Wall Street, exhibiting them al fresco, and inviting the public to physically annotate the paintings.

This has brought me and my art a great deal of attention. I've been on The Today Show, the PBS NewsHour, CNN, NBC Evening News and literally hundreds of other electronic and print outlets.

While I will continue to "paint Wall Street," I believe The PeaceBall Project deserves the majority of my attention for now.
